FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Straight answers to what clients usually ask before we start.

How do I decide how much to spend on engineering?

Generally, the long-term operation and maintenance of a project or asset is 70 to 75% of the asset’s total cost. The construction cost of a project is between 15 and 20%. Engineering is between 2 and 5% of the total cost, a relatively small percentage.

However, the role of the engineer is pivotal in meeting the client’s objectives, because it is during the design process that construction, operation and maintenance cost savings are most easily achieved. Selecting less skilled engineering services for the apparent least cost is often a false economy and can risk project failure.

Selecting the most deserving engineering firm for a specific project results in a well-designed, economical and successful project. Selecting an engineering consultancy is, therefore, one of the most important decisions a client makes.

In which domains of engineering do you provide services?

Electrical, civil, mechanical, process, projects and construction, through our business associates with similar industry experience.

How do you ensure interfaces with other engineering disciplines while executing instrumentation engineering?

For multi-discipline interfaces, physical distance between the disciplines is no limit for us. We have experience executing discipline interfaces very effectively, even across countries, with electronic tools like remote computer sharing, video conference calls and seamless communication.

What instrumentation detail engineering deliverables do you provide?

The full set a process plant needs: instrument index cum I/O lists, instrument datasheets, sizing calculations, hook-up drawings, loop drawings, logic diagrams, control system architectures, cable and drum schedules, JB schedules, cable tray and instrument location layouts, control room layouts, and enquiry and order specifications with technical bid evaluation.

Each service page lists its deliverables in full.

What electrical engineering services do you offer?

Electrical design basis and electrical load list; electrical calculations for cable sizing, earthing, lightning protection and lighting; single line and cable block diagrams; power, earthing and lighting layouts; cable and drum schedules; and enquiry specifications, bid analysis and vendor drawing approval for MCCs, VFDs, PDBs and LDBs.

Which control systems do you engineer?

DCS engineering, PLC engineering and emergency shutdown (ESD) system engineering, along with HIPPS, fire and gas detection, and machine and condition monitoring systems. Our engineers are experienced with all major DCS and PLC platforms and attend factory and site acceptance tests (FAT and SAT).

In what formats and software do you deliver?

Instrument datasheets in SPI (INtools), Excel or Word, as each client requires. Lists and schedules such as I/O lists and cable schedules are delivered in Excel, and drawings and layouts in CAD.

Which codes and standards do you work to?

We work to the project's specified codes, including IEC, ISA, NEC / NFPA, ISO, API, AGA, ASME, NORSOK, BSI (British Standards), Standards Australia, CSA, JIS, GOST-R, Shell DEP.

Do you work with EPC contractors and consultants?

Yes. Much of our work is EPC engineering support: we work as part of the engineering team of EPC contractors and Indian and international consultants, on projects for end clients such as Indian Oil, Saudi Aramco and ADNOC. Our past consultants and EPC clients are listed on the Services page.

Can you support us at the proposal or pre-bid stage?

Yes. We prepare pre-bid electrical and instrumentation deliverables in line with the tender specification, including MTOs, short specifications, approved vendor lists and pre-bid summaries.

Do you take on projects outside India?

Yes. We have delivered projects for clients in United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, United Kingdom, Norway, Canada and Australia. Distance is no limit: we work with your team through remote screen sharing and video calls.

Do you provide site support?

Yes. We carry out site surveys and inspections, attend FATs for control systems, analysers, field instruments and valves, and handle installation through our associate site contractors.
